Heroin use and addiction has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. It’s escaped the confines of the poor in dark alleyways and made its way into the homes of families from all different socioeconomic backgrounds.

But before it became the life altering drug we recognize today, it started as an innocent poppy plant in the fields of the ancient Mesopotamia civilization. This graphic novel chronicles the path that opium traveled throughout the globe, becoming a hotly in-demand crop, causing and inciting personal struggles from users along the way.

This app is created by a team of journalism and graphic arts students at the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Lab at Arizona State University. It is part of a larger school-wide effort to document how heroin use has spread throughout Arizona and steps are being taken to overcome it.
